Hi Dr. Peterson, I am an 18-year old girl and I have been feeling that my mother is immature (socially and emotionally). I worry about turning out like her and feel that I am missing a woman who can help me emotionally. Am I expecting too much? Any advice? Much love and gratitude.
Did you ever read Pirsig’s Lila : An enquiry into Morals. If so what did you make of it ? You have spoken of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance several times but I have never heard you reference Lila in which he expounded his metaphysical view . To me this chimes with a lot of what you discuss in making the fundamental reality patterns of value/ quality/meaning / order which is disrupted and improved by dynamic quality/ chaos with an aim at improvement. This seems to me similar to how you conceive the call to God as being a direction of positive travel albeit personified whereas Pirsig’s static / dynamic quality is not personified. Pirsig’s approach is also very evolutionary which chimes with a lot of what you discuss. I read Lila thirty years ago and it seemed to provide a way of making sense of things
You've said that we should aim to be educated to the level of our intelligence; and also that academia is no longer a hospitable place (and is making about 7 fatal errors), in addition to resigning from UoT from UoT. I've been thinking about applying for PhD programs but I don't know if it is "worth it" in terms of time/money and ideological poison. Also, Haidt's heterodox academy took down the university rating system so I can no longer see which places are more heterodox. What are your thoughts? Go for PhD or . . . ?
